American Association of University Women (AAUW) in conjunction with FoxFireFest
2 This is our
49th year, our seventeenth year with the city. Our goal is always to offer
a show that will provide area residents a unique opportunity to experience
and purchase original art or limited edition prints. Up to $2500 in prizes will be awarded.
Art
Showcase History
August 2nd
& 3rd, 2008 will bring the 48th consecutive Art
Showcase, presented by the Elgin Area Branch of the American Association
of University Women, to the
Elgin
community. AAUW member, Janet
Heinicke, an artist herself, brought into fruition her dreams of
presenting a quality art show in
Elgin
for the education and enjoyment of the community with the assistance of
AAUW branch members in 1960.
Art Showcase has
been presented in many
different locations throughout the Elgin area over the years including
Lord’s Park, Hemmens Plaza, Spring Hill Mall, the Gail Borden Library,
and the Milk Pail At
times the show also included a children’s art display, a used book sale,
artists’ demonstrations, musical entertainment, and children’s art
activities.
Sixteen years ago,
the City of
Elgin
approached AAUW and from that conversation the Fine Arts Festival was
born, with Art Showcase as its centerpiece.
In 2007 the Fine Arts Festival was replaced by a
new city
festival – the FoxFireFest. Again,
AAUW’s Art Showcase is an
integral part of this new and exciting community event.
Currently about 80
artists participate from all over the
United States
. Art Showcase presents $2500
in awards each year. Many
works of art have been purchased by the Gail Borden Library and the Elgin
Cultural Arts Commission and are currently on display in the gallery on
the lower level of the
Hemmens
Cultural
Arts
Center
